OFST now offers blended learning opportunities in three IFSAC-accredited hazmat training levels—awareness, operations and technician. Oklahoma emergency responders may now spend less time in the classroom, reduce travel time, and focus more on the critical skills of Hazardous Materials Emergency Response training.
Blended e-Learning, in its broadest meaning, refers to a learning program where more than one delivery mode is used with the objective of optimizing learning outcomes and program delivery costs.
In the case of OFST’s current offerings, the courses blend a self-paced component that utilizes a computer CD-ROM and other independent study aids. The CD-ROM contains interactive, multimedia capabilities—audio, full motion video, photos, graphics, and text—to effectively deliver cognitive material normally presented in the classroom. The courses’ hands-on or skills portions are presented by traditional means by OFST.
The multimedia training package—or “Blended e-Learning”— is a production of Fire Protection Publications (FPP) in conjunction with the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA). FPP’s current e-Learning courses are based on IFSTA training materials. The courses are developed through a cooperative research and development agreement.
Each student will require a computer with an Internet connection, Windows-supported operating systems, CD-ROM drive, and sound capabilities. Certification exams will be presented in a live, traditional format.
As with traditional hazardous materials training offered through OFST, the Blended e-Learning hazmat offerings are offered at no charge to Oklahoma emergency responders. This is made possible through the support of the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security and Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.
Those interested in enrolling in any of the three hazmat training offerings should contact Sally Knott, Scheduling Specialist, (800) 304-5727.
