Tulsa Fire Department Captains J.D. Marlar and Dannie Caldwell will present two, eight-hour sessions of Calling the Mayday, December 1-2, at the Southwest Regional Fire School in Lawton.
“This is one of the most important issues facing firefighters in Oklahoma as well as the nation,” says Captain Marlar, “because it deals with firefighter survival.” Captain Marlar, who with Caldwell are veteran TFD training officers, says that the main objective of the Calling the Mayday is to teach firefighters how to call for help. Both Marlar and Caldwell also serve as field instructors for OSU Fire Service Training.
Developed from the National Fire Academy, the course includes about five hours of classroom presentation that include such topics as:
- Define a Mayday situation
- Identify why firefighters fail to or delay calling a Mayday
- Identify Mayday decision-making parameters
- Calling procedures
- Identify Mayday training and drill needs for the fire service
The hands-on portion of the class requires the student to move through a course of six stations with full PPE, including SCBA on air, obscured vision, PASS device and radio. The stations simulate Mayday parameters including a fall, downed fighter who might be entangled, collapsed, trapped, lost or disoriented. At each simulated parameter the student will be required to give verbal Mayday alert on the radio, give L.U.N.A.R report, and activate pass device.
Each student will be required to bring their: complete turnout gear, SCBA with face piece and full bottle, Radio, and PASS device.
