Scope/Overview:

In the absence of a nearby medical facility, OSHA requires that companies designate and train at least one employee for every shift to provide first aid when necessary. OSU-FST offers site-specific first aid training for industry personnel with little or no background in first aid, CPR and AED. The training agenda stresses "what to do in the first five minutes" until professional medical help arrives. Taught by qualified emergency-rescue professionals, the program emphasizes practical, hands-on use of manikins and trainee partners throughout the class sessions.

Key Topic(s):

  • Performing a primary survey of the victim.
  • Obtaining the victim's health history at the scene.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Applying CPR and AED's.
  • Injury and acute illness.
  • Working with local emergency response systems and teams.
  • Principles of triage.
  • Legal aspects of providing first aid.
  • Methods of surveying an incident scene; assessing the need for first aid.
  • Bandaging and splinting.
  • Rescue and transport of victims.
  • Body substance isolation and PPE.

Course Length:

16 hours for initial training; 8 hours for annual refresher training

Prerequisite(s):
