About Certification

The OSU-FST Certification Section has achieved International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NPQS) accreditation in eleven technical levels.  IFSAC and NPQS accredited certification gives reasonable assurance of the content and quality of the testing program offered by OFST.  The OFST Certification System is designed to meet or exceed IFSAC and NPQS criteria.

Challenging Certification Examinations

The OFST Certification System is an open system, meaning that candidates may obtain training from sources other than OFST. Candidates who challenge certification exams based on training they have received from an outside source will be required to document this training on a Training Verification Form. This form must be completed by the candidate’s fire chief/employer (or designee).

Candidates desiring to challenge a certification exam must receive prior approval from the Certification Manager. The Certification Manager may deny any challenge requests that are not received at least ten (10) working days prior to the exam.

Candidates may only challenge exams during scheduled certification exams. Challenge exams will not be given at the OFST offices, nor will special challenge exams be administered. The Certification Manager will consider exception to this procedure when an organization has a reasonable number of candidates needing to test, when a candidate will have to wait an inordinate amount of time before a scheduled certification exam will be offered, or a candidate would be required an inordinate travel distance.

Requesting a Certification Exam for Locally Delivered / Non OFST Sponsored Classes

OFST will administer local examinations for a reasonable number of candidates. Requests must be made at least 30 days prior to the anticipated test date. The candidate’s employer(s) shall ensure that each candidate has demonstrated profocoency in all available job performance requirements (JPRs) or performance objectives.

OFST Staff may conduct a site visit to determine if the site is suitable. Approved sites may not require subsequent review unless, in the opinion of OFST, the characteristics and/or facilities of the site have changed substantially.

If, in the opinion of OFST, the examination site is not conducive for conducting the exam on the specified date, and modification cannot be made in a reasonable period of time, the examination will be relocated, canceled, or postponed.

OFST reserves the right to allow any outside candidate(s) to attend a locally delivered examination.

Retest Procedures

Candidates failing to successfully complete the written and/or skills portion of an exam will be permitted to retest the portion(s) failed at a later date. Candidates desiring to retest must arrange the retest with Certification Staff at least 10 working days prior to the desired exam date.
