40-hour Hazardous Materials Technician

Scope/Overview:

Comprehensive and action-packed, OSU's 40-hour program is for technician level responders who deal with multiple chemicals, and a complex range of contingencies at their plant site. Complicating factors such as storage, handling, loading, unloading and transporting, and processing may present an endless array of potential hazards and emergencies. The agenda deals with the many decisions facing industry first responders. Participants will learn how to identify materials by using field survey instruments, evaluate hazards and risks, and select the appropriate PPE level for a given hazard. More time is allowed for practical training exercises in control, containment and decontamination. Through site-specific scenario training, participants will demonstrate teamwork, and the ability to safely and effectively implement the response objective. By custom design, the course emphasizes the most prevalent types of chemicals and incidents at the facility. The 40-hour course will meet or exceed technician level requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
